Independent quality control is a side benefit of starting a 3D YachtManual during construction or refit.
In order to properly describe a system, it needs to be thoroughly investigated and understood by visually tracing all the components and testing their function. Potential problems can then be discovered and remedied (e.g. plumbing leaks, a brass fitting against aluminum, a tank vent blocked by a water-trap, electric relays without diodes against back-EMF, enclosed damp spaces that cause heavy corrosion). One major reason for such problems is the fact that most designers and yard personnel spend little or no time at sea operating the vessels they design and build.
A nosy engineer with hands-on experience will foresee many future problems caused by hidden or seemingly trivial mistakes. Provided such corrections are dealt with tactfully, they are in my experience greatly appreciated by the yard and project managers.
